I'll be standing on the shoreline, watching my ship set sail.I'll be waving goodbye to what would have been my life.

on little boys who like "bob esponja"

too often i get caught up in my own little world - full of pointless things like making money or stressing about stuff i need to do or buying more stuff i don't need at all-

and then i get a letter from kevin elieser alfaro hernandez, my compassion child.  he is five years old and lives in el salvador.  he has chubby little cheeks and hands, big brown eyes, and a beautiful smile.  this is what he wrote to me today:

hello dear sister miss rachel burnett:
i love to go to kindergarten, to draw, to paint, and play with toys.  i like to help my mom do chores and watch sponge bob.  i love animals like the tiger and the elephant.  i ask you to pray for me and my family that the lord gives us health.  what does your place look like?  do you like animals?  i hope you send me a picture and a letter soon.  bye from Kevin with much affection.

now there's a reason to wake up in the morning.  i am so blessed.

Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life For Me...

On opening night of Pirates of the Caribbean 3

Saturday, May 12, 2007

once upon a red letter evening...

3pm - meet up with Hannah and leave for Norfolk loaded with M&M's, peach fresca, and cherry kool-aid

3:51pm - driving  - "I'd rather Croak than live in Croaker."  "And they don't have any bathrooms."

5pm - traffic and "hey, white girls."

5:31pm - riding on the bridge, over the water, windows down, salty wind blowing like crazy, beautiful day by U2 blasting on the speakers.  does life get any better?

5:55pm - on Monticello Ave. - "Those are show kids behind us.  Now they're dancing."  "I've got to go to the bathroom."   "Me too.  Where should we park?"

6pm- "Remember where we parked" "S1C"  "Stupid One Charlie"  "Silly Ones Crazy"  "Serious Ones Crying"  "Psycho Ones Calling"

6:10pm - Walking out of the mall I'm grabbed by Hannah.  "Rachel - that's Matt.  Should we say something?"  "Hey Matt!  ... We've like, grown up with you guys."  "Since your first tour."  yeah, we're cool.

6:15pm - stting on the curb in front of the NORVA - "I just want to be known, man.  One look, ya know? You pull it off really well."  "I think you do too.  You in your Anberlin shirt."  "Eeh, I have really bad hair.  Really bad"

6:30pm - 10pm: the show - Hot Vegas, Sherwood, Relient K, squirrels and fake campfires, banjos and Weezer covers.  Hannah recognizes Ethan from the Supertones (RIP)

10:1pm - pictures in the parking deck.  "Sultry wonderous girls."

11:30pm - Star Fin, over and over and over again.

12:30am - Aladdin's for some late night falafel

1:55am - driving down Grace St., headed for home.  BAM.  we get rear-ended.

2:24am - waiting for the police.  three not so sober young men chase a possum down Grace St.  and scream at it loudly.  possum starts for me and hannah.  veers to the right at the last minute. possum runs into a hotel foyer - lots of screams.  me and hannah doubled over laughing in the Ukrops parking lot.

3:03am - driving - down Manakin Rd.  Cannonball by Damien Rice blasting on the speakers.  incredible starry night sky.  does life get any better?
